Orofacial Pain is pain that we feel in the face, the jaw and the mouth. Orofacial pain is often chronic and persistent, distressing, and debilitating. Its causes are multifactorial and complex. Orofacial pain may occur for a number of reasons including dental disease, problems with the jaw joint and jaw muscles, sinus infection, migraine headaches, neuralgias and nerve damage. A common cause of orofacial pain is the Temporomandibular (Jaw) Joint, or "TMJ". The TMJ is located in front of your ear on both sides of your head. When the TMJ or jaw muscles cause jaw pain or dysfunction, doctors use the term Temporo mandibular Disorder or TMD.
